The Planning Department of Hammersmith and Fulham Council helped set up the Urban Studies Centre as an educational charity in 1983. Since then, it has worked with schools and the local community to promote an understanding of the built environment and environmental change.
The Centre is concerned with helping children understand the process of change - how places have come to be the way they are and what they might be like in the future. The aim of the work is to help people of all ages develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to participate in the shaping of the local environment and environmental issues.
This is achieved by:
- organising projects for schools which are directly linked to National Curriculum targets
- development of learning materials and training for local teachers
- an extensive information and resource base on the local area
- a network of contacts in the local community.
